The Ministry of Defense of Spain has been targeted in a cyber attack, El País newspaper reports. The Ministry’s intranet is said to be infiltrated with a virus for the purpose of stealing information.
The virus was discovered at the beginning of March by the Ministry of Defense in Spain, which is now announcing that an attack has taken place on the intranet. This is used by around 50,000 government employees in the country.
The ministry reports that it is a very advanced virus that has entered the internal system via e-mail. The attack is seen as a “very serious threat to national security”. For the time being it does not appear that classified information has been leaked, because no secret documents are shared via the intranet.
Because it is a sophisticated virus, the Spanish Ministry of Defense thinks it is probably an attack by another country. However, there are no firm indications of the origin of the attack.
