Johnson receives support from an unexpected corner after canceling the press conference

The Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel has taken on the anger of a number of British politicians. After British Prime Minister Boris Johnson had run away after shouts of protesters, Bettel held a press conference on his own on Monday. “I actually wanted to thank Mr. Johnson for the conversation we had together,” he said laughingly, pointing at the empty pulpit next to him. Protesters shouted a few yards away: “Fuck Boris!”

British politicians, including some prominent Prime Minister critics, suddenly stood up for Johnson and found Bettel’s performance inappropriate. For example, Lower House Member Nicholas Soames, the grandson of Churchill and recently expelled from the party by Johnson because of his criticism of the Brexit policy, called the action “very bad.” Member of the European Parliament Daniel Hannan called the press conference an “anti-Brexit meeting.” Nick Boles, who left the Conservative party some time ago, also called it “rude” that the press conference was not being moved inside.

In the meantime, many memes of the image of the empty lectern were shared on Twitter. Guy Verhofstadt, the Brexit negotiator of the European Parliament, seized the moment to refer to the interview Johnson gave Sunday in which he compared the United Kingdom with the Hulk.
