Also in the years when Donald Trump was president of the United States, several Chinese balloons flew over American territory. Those were not always noticed by the Pentagon, admits General Glen VanHerck, responsible for the security of North American airspace.
In recent years, at least five times such a balloon would have been detected, including over Texas, Florida, Hawaii and Guam, where the Americans have military bases.
“It was my job to detect these threats and I have to admit that we did not succeed,” VanHerck told reporters at the Washington Post. He calls it a” worrying shortcoming ” and says he wants to do something about it.
Anonymous sources tell Bloomberg that during the Trump presidency, three balloons were spotted over militarily strategic places, such as the ports where American aircraft carriers are docked. These were smaller balloons than the one that was spotted last week and then shot down over the Atlantic by the US Air Force.
US President Joe Biden states that the spy balloon incident “does not worsen the relationship between China and the United States.”
