China: exclusion of Huawei from construction of 5G networks would be immoral

China finds it “abnormal and immoral” if European countries would exclude Chinese telecom companies from establishing fast 5G networks in Europe. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that in Brussels after consultation with EU foreign chief Mogherini.

Both NATO and the EU have expressed concerns about possible “back doors” in software from the Chinese company Huawei, which could allow trade or state secrets to find their way to Beijing. According to Yi, such “unfounded” allegations are politically motivated.

Yi said cyber security is a shared international challenge and Beijing is willing to work together to set international standards in this area. He expressed the hope that Member States would allow fair competition for companies from all countries.

Mogherini emphasized that the EU countries themselves decide which companies allow them on the market. The EU is in favor of an open and level playing field, she said.
