Candy maker investigates attack on personnel

Candy manufacturer Perfetti Van Melle has promised to investigate an attack on personnel in a factory in Bangladesh. Around 20 unknown attackers, according to trade union leader Kamrul Hassan, entered the factory earlier this week and beat the workers with wooden sticks.

According to Hassan, staff were already threatened when they wanted to set up their own trade union. They did that at the end of February anyway. The staff at the factory in Gazipur, near the capital Dhaka, accuses local managers of not doing anything to prevent the attack. According to the police, there was a fight between two groups of employees.

Van Melle Perfetti says that it is responsible for “ensuring the safety of our personnel at work.”
