Five hacking groups are attempting to breach a satellite orbiting the Earth. This is happening with the permission of the US government, as reported by the news site Politico on Friday. It would be the first time that hackers are used to gain control over a space satellite.
The attempts to remotely take control of the satellite are taking place during the DEF CON cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas. The satellite in question is a SpaceX Moonlighter, orbiting the Earth at a low altitude with a speed of over eight kilometers per second.
According to Politico, the US Air Force and the recently established US Space Force hope that the hackers will expose any vulnerabilities in the security that could be exploited by China or other adversaries.
Additionally, the efforts of the hacking groups are intended to contribute to the development of more secure space systems, as reported by Politico.
According to the US news website, China has previously attempted to hack a satellite. At the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, Russia hacked the satellite network of an American telecommunications company.
