Two U.S. senators today come up with a new bill giving the president the power to ban TikTok and other foreign technology that poses a threat to U.S. national security. Last week, a similar proposal was already adopted by a committee of the US House of Representatives, as a result of which the House of Representatives will now vote on it.
The new bill comes from a Democratic and Republican senator.
“When it comes to foreign technology entering the United States, we need a systematic approach to ensure that we can ban it when necessary,” said Senator Mark Warner, who will present the proposal together with senator John Thune today.
Warner claims that TikTok is one of the possible targets of the bill. “They’re taking data from Americans and not keeping it safe,” the senator told Fox News. “But what worries me more about TikTok is that it can be a propaganda tool. The videos you see promote ideological issues.” The content of the bill has yet to be announced, but Warner previously made it clear that it can be used for all kinds of foreign technology.
