Many airlines avoid part of Iranian airspace. Due to Iran’s high-altirude shooting of an American drone, KLM, British Airways, Qantas and Lufthansa, among others, no longer fly above the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman.
The American aviation authority FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) previously issued a ban for civil aviation to make even longer use of the airspace controlled by Tehran above the straits.
KLM called the step a “precautionary measure”.
“Safety is top priority for KLM. We are closely following all developments that may be related to airspace safety 24/7 and are organizing the operation so that flight safety is guaranteed, “the airline said in a statement.
The companies that avoid the area let their planes fly over. Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines are also doing this. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines had already announced that they would no longer fly over Iran following the FAA step. United Airlines has temporarily suspended its flights between New York and Mumbai.
