President Donald Trump reported Friday that he is calling for a state of emergency. With this measure, the president hopes to have sufficient money available for the construction of a wall on the border with Mexico. Trump wants to build that wall to stop illegal immigrants.
The president said in a speech that he signs under the decree on the declaration of the state of emergency. Trump added that he is taking that measure against the “invasion of the country with drugs, human smugglers and all kinds of criminals and gangs.”
By promulgating the state of emergency, Trump can take away money from the Congress, including the Ministry of Defense and the budget for emergency response. Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, said they will challenge Trump’s measure in Congress and the court. According to Pelosi, there is no question of a national emergency at the southern border.
Mick Mulvaney, Chief of Staff at Trump, said the president could release about $ 8 billion (over € 7 billion) to finance the wall by issuing a state of emergency. Mulvaney criticized the Democratic Party for refusing to reserve 5.7 billion euros for Trump in a budget proposal prepared by Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
