Trade talks scheduled on October

China and the United States hold trade talks in Washington in early October. This has been announced by Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Liu He after a telephone conversation with US Finance Minister Steven Mnuchin. The expectation was that the discussions would take place in September.

Liu is going to the US early next month to talk to Mnuchin, among others. This month the talks are being prepared by lower government employees from both sides.

The chances of a solution to the trade war between the two countries appear to be increasing as a result. If there is no breakthrough, then the import tariffs imposed by both countries will probably be increased again on 15 December.

Doubts about willingness of China

“China and the US both do not want to be blamed for escalating the conflict,” says a Chinese diplomat. “But the discussions do not mean that the parties will actually come closer together.”

Several members of the US government would doubt China’s willingness to meet the wishes of the US. In May the talks broke down on the American wish that China would implement reforms. China refused.

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he hopes for a deal with China for the US presidential election next year. If that does not work out, he will take a much tougher position in his possible second term of office.
